چکیده
Objective-To discover the cause of an outbreak of facial rash in a holiday centre. Design-Questionnaire survey of those with rash; analysis of samples of linen. Setting-Holiday centre in south west England. Patients-98 holidaymakers presenting to the first aid post with a facial rash. Intervention-Replacement of bed linen with new linen in selected parts of the site. Results-The attack rate was 7-0-14-2/1000 for most accommodation areas in the centre, but in one accommodation area the rate was zero. The pH of rinse water from sheets varied from 7-4 to 9-0. Those parts of the accommodation provided with new linen had zero attack rates. Conclusion-The facial rash resulted from irritation from washing powder retained owing to insufficient rinsing during laundering. Modifications to the rinsing process led to a gradual disappearance of the rash.

A mask to modify inspired air temperature and humidity and its effect on exercise induced asthma.
BACKGROUND Heat and moisture loss from the respiratory tract during exercise are important triggers of exercise induced asthma. METHODS A new heat and moisture exchange mask has been developed which both recovers exhaled heat and water and has a sufficiently low resistance for use during exercise. The effect of the mask on inspired air temperature was studied in four normal subjects. Eight as...

reduction in the forced expiratory volume in one second after exercise was calculated using the pre-exercise value as the baseline value. Statistical significance was calculated with Student's paired t test. The study was approved by the research ethical committee of the Faculty of Medicine, Queen's University, Belfast. The table shows the percentage reduction in forced expiratory volume in one...
متن کاملA breathing filter exchanging heat and moisture prevents asthma induced by cold air.
In order to devise a protective aid against bronchial obstruction induced by cold air, we have tested a breathing filter with heat and moisture exchanging properties. Nine asthma patients, who all had a history of cold-induced asthma, took part in exercise tests on an ergometer bicycle at a temperature of approximately -10 degrees C, without and with a breathing filter. Without a breathing filt...
متن کاملRecovery benefits of using a heat and moisture exchange mask during sprint exercise in cold temperatures
Objectives Breathing cold air can lead to bronchoconstriction and peripheral vasoconstriction, both of which could impact muscular performance by affecting metabolic demands during exercise. Successful solutions dealing with these physiological changes during exercise in the cold has been lacking; therefore, we investigated the influence of a heat and moisture exchange mask during exercise in t...
متن کاملEfficacy of a heat exchanger mask in cold exercise-induced asthma.
STUDY OBJECTIVES To determine the efficacy of a novel mask device in limiting cold air exercise-induced decline in lung function in subjects with a history of exercise-induced asthma (EIA). SETTING In spite of appropriate medical therapy, many asthma patients are limited in cold weather activities. DESIGN In study 1, 13 asthmatic subjects performed two randomized, single-blind treadmill exe...
متن کاملEffectiveness of a heat and moisture exchanger in preventing hyperpnoea induced bronchoconstriction in subjects with asthma.
The effect of a heat and moisture exchanger, a device with hygroscopic material for conditioning inspired air, on hyperpnoea induced bronchoconstriction was studied in nine non-smoking volunteers with asthma, aged 19-32 years. Each had previously shown an increase of at least 100% in specific airways resistance (sRaw) to isocapnic hyperpnoea with dry air. On two separate days the subject perfor...
